Dinsdagmiddag 28 mei bereikte ons het droevige nieuws dat Erik Bais op veel te jonge leeftijd overleden is. De schok die dit binnen de Nederlandse internet community teweeg bracht is niet in woorden uit te drukken. Erik stond midden in deze community, onder andere via zijn functies binnen de Dutch Cloud Community, het Anti Abuse Netwerk en de RIPE Address Policy Working Group. Voor deze organisaties zette hij zich belangeloos en vol overgave in.

Ook binnen NLNOG was hij al vele jaren actief: op de mailinglist en IRC was hij vaak te vinden, en bij de evenementen was Erik eigenlijk altijd wel aanwezig.

Erik hielp anderen graag, en velen hebben baat gehad bij de kennis en ervaring die hij graag en regelmatig deelde. Dat kon zijn op technisch gebied, maar vaak ook juist op heel andere vlakken. Dat bleek met name na de presentatie die Erik gaf op NLNOG Day 2019 over het werken in een giftige werkomgeving. Dit was voor diverse aanwezigen een eye opener en gaf een duw in de rug om werk te gaan maken van het verbeteren van hun werkomstandigheden. Ook nam hij de tijd om met hierover mensen te praten en ze te adviseren.

Het bestuur van NLNOG is Erik erg dankbaar voor alle jaren dat hij met zijn bedrijven sponsor was van onze events. De prijs van een /24 aan IPv4-adressen die hij een aantal jaren op rij aanbood aan de winnaar van de NLNOG Quiz werd snel legendarisch.

Het gemis van Erik is ongelooflijk groot. We wensen zijn familie, collega’s, vrienden en iedereen die hem een warm hart toedraagt heel veel sterkte in deze moeilijke tijd.

Er is een online gedenkplaats voor Erik gemaakt waar plaats is voor condoleances en waar herinneringen aan Erik gedeeld kunnen worden.

Tuesday afternoon, May 28, we received the sad news that Erik Bais passed away at a much too young age. The shock this brought within the Dutch internet community is beyond words. Erik was at the heart of this community, among other things through his roles within the Dutch Cloud Community, the Anti Abuse Network, and the RIPE Address Policy Working Group. He dedicated himself to these organizations selflessly and with great enthusiasm.

He had also been active within NLNOG for many years: he was often found on the mailing list and IRC, and Erik was almost always present at the events.

Erik loved helping others, and many benefited from the knowledge and experience he generously and regularly shared. This could be in the technical field, but often in very different areas as well. This was especially evident after the presentation Erik gave at NLNOG Day 2019 about working in a toxic work environment. This was an eye-opener for several attendees and gave them the push they needed to start improving their working conditions. He also took the time to talk to people about this and to advise them.

The NLNOG board is very grateful to Erik for all the years his companies sponsored our events. The prize of a /24 block of IPv4 addresses that he offered to the winner of the NLNOG Quiz for several years quickly became legendary.

The loss of Erik is incredibly great. We wish his family, colleagues, friends, and everyone who cared about him a lot of strength in this difficult time.
